In late June, I travelled to Paderborn, Germany, together with my colleague Florian Tuder to receive the 2026 Comenius EduMedia Award for HistoriCall, the House of European History's digital learning platform for teaching European history and integration in an engaging, interactive and adaptable way.

Receiving the award was a proud moment for our museum. It was also an opportunity to discover an impressive range of educational projects from across Europe.

This year, more than 150 projects from seven countries were submitted by museums, schools, universities, NGOs, publishers, public institutions and private organisations. HistoriCall received the award in the category Euro societal educational media, recognising digital resources that strengthen European dialogue and civic learning. What particularly impressed me was the quality of the international jury and the rigorous selection criteria. Projects were evaluated not only for innovation, but also for their pedagogical value, media quality, usability and long-term educational impact. Achieving recognition through such a thorough evaluation makes this award especially meaningful.

HistoriCall currently offers four multilingual modules exploring European integration, media literacy and anti-racism through the lens of European history. Developed through an iterative process, testing and evaluation with teachers across Europe, the platform combines historical sources, interactive activities and Visible Thinking routines to help teachers foster historical thinking, critical reflection and classroom discussions.

Collecting the Comenius EduMedia Award is an honour for our team. More importantly, it confirms that digital learning can successfully combine academic rigour, technological innovation and meaningful classroom practice. Above all, it encourages us to continue developing resources with and for teachers across Europe, helping young people engage critically with Europe's history, understand the challenges of today's world and become thoughtful, active citizens.
