The exhibition Raising our Roots - Bruxelles à travers onze ogen was created by the Echoes collective — the House of European History's first long-term participative project comprised of young people from across Brussels.
It was installed on the sixth floor of the museum from June - October 2025 and focussed on representation and migration stories in history.
The exhibition has been short-listed for the Visit Brussels Awards 2026 in the "Best Co-creation" category, in part due to its involvement of young people from a range of communes and backgrounds, as well as local partners such as GSARA, Naomi Aguilera (La Forestière), Astrid Begenyeza, Mustapha Bentaleb (Firstwaves archives), Aleema Gray (House of Dread), Sarra El Massaoudi (Nos Héritages), Reine Mbote, and Emma Perez.
Annelies van Rijen, Outreach Coordinator and Project lead: “Raising our Roots brought together young voices from across Brussels to challenge dominant narratives of European history and reimagine how museums tell stories. This nomination celebrates our belief and commitment to making space for dialogue, shared authority, and to reflect the diversity of the societies that museums serve.”
The first stage of the awards process is a public vote for the candidates, with the finalists then being selected by a local jury from media, culture and tourism sectors.
If you would like to support the award candidacy, you can vote for Raising our Roots on the Visit Brussels website between 6 January - 12 February.
